Recommendation

Moderna Museet, Stockholm

Moderna Museet is my suggestion for a date with art and a good conversation afterwards. Bring someone whose taste is nothing like yours, choose an exhibition together, and give yourselves something interesting to disagree about over lunch. Or go alone and be gloriously selective.

On Skeppsholmen, the museum’s collection ranges across Swedish and international modern and contemporary art, including works by Meret Oppenheim, Pablo Picasso and Robert Rauschenberg, as well as photography, sculpture and moving images. You can follow an artist you already love or pick an exhibition simply because the images draw you in. I’d give it a proper hour. If you go together, each choose a work you’d take home, then tell each other why.

Leave room for lunch. The restaurant looks out over the water towards Djurgården and Strandvägen; there’s also a coffee bar by the entrance if you’d prefer something smaller. I’d make the walk across Skeppsholmen part of the outing, too. Art, a meal and a walk give you three quite different ways to spend time together, with very little organising.

Browse the exhibitions and plan your visit. Pick something you’re curious about, send the link to a friend, and put a date in the diary.
